Converter FAQ
Below are frequently asked questions about DPF or catalytic converters.
What are Catalytic Converters? |
---|
Catalytic Converters help reduce the amount of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and unreacted hydrocarbons in automotive emissions. |
What are Dual-bed Converter systems? |
Dual-bed Converter systems reduce exhaust gases first in order to eliminate the oxides of nitrogen; then its oxidized with air added to eliminate unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. |
What are Three-way Converter systems? |
Three-way Converters (also known as oxidation/reduction converters) are more advanced as they reduce each species simultaneously by using individual catalysts. Oxidation converters are designed to reduce levels of oxides of nitrogen, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. Some Three-way Converters are equipped with an air injection tube which assists the chemical reaction by pumping air (via the air pump) in to the oxidation catalyst. |
What are Diesel Catalytic Converters and DPF’s? |
Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) were introduced in the late 2000’s as a new Catalytic Converter for diesel vehicles. Diesel engines in general are a dirtier burn than gas engines. When new laws were introduced to help cut down greenhouse emissions, new DPF’s were introduced to help limit black smoke emissions. These new DPF’s were able to help diesel trucks, buses, vans and other diesel vehicles burn much more efficiently and cleanly. |
What is a Sports CAT? |
A Sports CAT can do everything a standard CAT does but in a much more efficient way. Sports CATs decrease the chamber size creating a smoother surface within the chamber, resulting in a quicker flow of the gases through it. Inside a sports CAT the ceramic honeycomb construction is much finer than a standard CAT to keep emissions low and this also allows the CATs to be more effective in converting the harmful toxins that would otherwise escape. More power can be achieved to switching to a sports CAT with the engine cycle freed-up to maximise its efficiency. |
What is a Direct Fit Catalytic Converter? |
Manifold and Direct-fit Catalytic Converters exactly match the design of the OEM part, they are designed to bolt onto the vehicle without any adjustments to the exhaust system or the mount space. Direct-fit CATs are manufactured specifically to the vehicle on which they will be installed on. Direct-fit Converters usually cost more than there Universal CAT Converter counterparts. It is recommended to use a Direct-fit Catalytic Converter if your exhaust system is OEM-styled or factory-fitted. |
What is a Universal Fit Catalytic Converter? |
Universal-fit Converters are designed to be compatible with a number of different vehicles with minor alterations made. Universal-fit Converters are usually cheaper than Direct-fit Converters. Installation of a Universal-fit CAT Converter requires the necessary tools and is not a simple job, pipes need to be cut to the correct length to fit onto the converter. It is advisable to use a professional mechanic to install a Universal CAT Converter, the task also usually involves a lot of time and physical work. It is recommended to use a Universal-fit Catalytic Converter if you are looking for the most cost-efficient converter or the vehicle is currently fitted with a Universal Converter. |
Can I use a normal universal type converter on a diesel vehicle? |
No. A gas engine converter will not function on a vehicle with a diesel engine. |
What is a substrate? |
A substrate is the material inside the converter shell. There are two types of original equipment substrates: Pelletized, which are ceramic pellets and Monolithic which is a "honeycomb" style ceramic. |
What is a catalyst? |
A catalyst is a thin coating of precious metal (palladium, platinum and rhodium) applied to the substrate material on its surface. The function of a catalyst is to assist in the chemical reactions needed to lower emission levels. |
